GreaterSport was founded by the ten Greater Manchester Councils in 1996 to coordinate the Greater Manchester Youth Games. In order to successfully deliver this event, strong relationships and a partnership ethos were firmly established and remain the core values of the company.
Building on the Youth Games, the company developed the Greater Manchester Sports Partnership in 2000 to encompass organisations that work widely across the sports and physical activity sector. GreaterSport remain committed to supporting the work of this dynamic sector.
Having lived though the experience of Manchester's commitment to high profile events ranging from the Commonwealth Games to the Paralympic World Cup, partners understand the energy that major events create.
Greater Manchester is ready to work together to ensure that we harness the incredible power and positivity of the Olympics and Paralympics. Collectively we will use 2012 to get Greater Manchester active.
GreaterSport is totally committed to help bring the legacy of 2012 to life.
Greater Manchester is committed to the recruitment, development and support of sports coaches to meet the current skills shortage we have in our local area.
Being a sports coach can improve confidence, develop self esteem and social development, as well as offering participants fun and enjoyment and a desire to progress further with their sport. We aim to support the development of approximately 1000 new and existing coaches within Greater Manchester to underpin the delivery of sport across our county. Community Sports Clubs are the heart of sport and developing a strong network of high quality sports clubs in Greater Manchester is the key to increasing and sustaining sports participation.
GreaterSport recognises that sports clubs, together with their volunteers and coaches, act as a sporting and social hub for the local community. In this environment the sports club creates opportunities for coaches, volunteers and members and allows people to enjoy and improve their sporting experience to the best of their ability.
Sports Volunteering in England accounts for 26% of total adult volunteering with over one billion hours contributed to sport each year.
Without volunteers sport would not be sustainable and is vital across the entire sports spectrum from supporting major international events such as the Olympics and Paralympics, right through to supporting local sports clubs for both children and adults.
